Early Years Maths
Early Years Maths is taught following the Mastering Number scheme and includes sessions on Spatial Awareness. These are 15 minute daily teacher led sessions, followed by group activities and activities incorporated into provision and play.
As the Year progresses, children begin to use Rekenreks to support their learning in Mastering Number.
Key Stage 1 and 2
In Key Stage 1 and 2, the main Maths lessons follow the WhiteRose Scheme of work. This scheme has a focus upon building a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. This is supported by the use of Teaching for Mastery, which allows for learning to be broken into small steps and for children to recognise the links between key facts.
In addition to the main maths lesson, all children complete a 15 minute Mastering Number session. In Key Stage 1 and Year 3, these focus on the development of number sense and number bonds. In Key Stage 1, the use of Rekenreks is continued. In Year 4, the focus is on multiplication and division facts, in readiness for the end of Year Multiplication Check.
Number Facts and Multiplication Tables
We recognise the importance of children being able to rapidly recall key number facts. We make use of TT Rockstars and Numbots to support learning in this area, and these resources are available to use at home too! To further support children’s learning, you can also download the free WhiteRose One Minute Maths app from the App store or Google Play. This supports the children’s development of number bonds.
